I-35 through Downtown Austin

Overview

Two concepts are being considered for Downtown Austin:

  • Modified Existing – Incorporates mobility improvements in a similar configuration to today's existing roadway, utilizing modern bridge design to widen crossings under the interstate
  • Depressed – Incorporates mobility improvements  and depresses the roadway, or lowers the grade of the mainlanes below surface level, from approximately 12th Street to south of Cesar Chavez
    • Caps, or covers for the roadway at surface level, could be constructed at locations over the depressed freeway. These caps could be a part of initial construction or added at a later date.

Purpose and Need

  • Add mainlane capacity
  • Improved corridor congestion
  • Improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities
  • Improved east/west connectivity

  • Improved bicycle/pedestrian facilities
  • Maintained east/west connectivity at all existing locations for all existing modes of travel
