​I-35 at 51st Street


Overview

The schematic and environmental process is underway for this project which will improve the southbound frontage road of I-35 in the vicinity of 51st Street.

Purpose and Need

  • Reduced bottleneck at the southbound frontage road and 51st St.
  • Improved connection to existing U-turn structure
  • Improved southbound ramp operations between 51st St. and Airport Blvd.

End Result

  • Realigned southbound frontage road
  • New southbound collector-distributor road
  • New roundabout at 51st St. and the southbound frontage road
  • Revised ramp configuration on the southbound frontage road
  • Improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities

Funding

  • Project development funded by TxDOT and the city of Austin
  • Construction not currently funded
  • Construction cost estimate: $13 million

Schedule

  • Finalized schematic and environmental documentation: anticipated end of 2015​
