Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements

One of the goals of the Mobility35 program is to enhance bicycle and pedestrian operations. Potential improvements include bicycle and pedestrian facilities along and across I-35 with shared use paths where sufficient right-of-way exists, dedicated pedestrian signals at all traffic signal locations and ADA-compliant pathways. Improvements will:

  • Provide safer bicycle and pedestrian routes
  • Increase east-west mobility throughout the corridor
  • Support multiple travel modes

Cyclists and Pedestrians in Innovative Intersections

Pedestrian use and cyclist use are being carefully considered as part of the evaluation process for the innovative intersections proposed in multiple locations throughout the corridor, including the Diverging Diamond Intersection (DDI) and the Modern Roundabouts.

  • DDIs facilitate pedestrian use and cyclist use by providing crosswalks and sidewalks on the outside or the inside of the intersection. Crossing is safer because users cross only one direction of traffic at a time.
  • Roundabouts provide the ability to cross one direction of traffic at a time, reducing the need to watch for turning traffic.
