Myths

Myth vs. Reality

I-35 is the most congested corridor in Texas and carries more than 200,000 vehicles per day on some segments in the Austin area. Solutions to improve I-35 are being developed through a grassroots, locally-driven initiative called Mobility 35. In an effort to dispel false information, we will continue to share the facts on proposed improvements as the plan evolves throughout the development process.

MYTH:

TxDOT plans to demolish all bridges that cross I-35 in Austin

REALITY:

The Mobility 35 program has never proposed removing bridges that cross I-35 in Austin. While several innovative ideas to improve I-35 are being considered, demolishing or removing bridges across I-35 is not a part of the discussion. Some of these concepts propose changing the crossing movements for vehicles – not bicycles or pedestrians. With stakeholder input, these locations and concepts are still being reviewed and refined, similar to Woodland Avenue and St. Johns Avenue.

MYTH:

TxDOT is only doing outreach now because neighborhoods are upset about concepts proposed in the Mobility 35 plan

REALITY:

Community outreach on Mobility 35 began more than two years ago and it continues today. In fact, the development of several technically-feasible concepts that you see today is the direct result of that public involvement. To date, we’ve heard from thousands of individuals through more than a hundred meetings regarding ideas for improving I-35. The Mobility 35 team continues to refine these concepts and shape the plan based on your feedback.

MYTH:

There’s a lot of uncertainty about what TxDOT is proposing so it’s best to get information from others

REALITY:

The best way to get accurate information is to go to the source. As the originators of the plan, we can provide the most accurate and up-to-date information and we are glad to do so. The Mobility 35 team welcomes the opportunity to visit with anyone interested in I-35. Please email your request or questions to info@mobility35.org, or visit www.mobility35.org.

Addressing safety and mobility needs throughout the corridor, as well as finding solutions that best address all corridor requirements, is a priority of the Mobility 35 program and we welcome your input. For accurate information about Mobility 35, please email your questions to info@mobility35.org or continue to visit www.mobility35.org.
